Mark Kelley's recent remark in
Are the Scuba divers in APJ a minority in the diving community? In many ways, I think so. I recall a woman who wrote in rec.Scuba that she loved to dive nude or topless. She got flamed unmercifully. There was even some guy who suggested that it was dangerous to go without skins - the fish would bite you!!
In Scubaduba's bulletin board, there is a post entitled "The 60-foot Club/ i.e. Doing IT Down There" to which every reply was negative. One guy who called himself 'nobody' wrote, "This is such crap! Let's give inexperienced divers another thing to try and die for!" To which, someone else replied, "I think "nobody' has the right idea. What with all the wonderful beaches, resorts, and other terrestrial opportunities, even I (of frequent hormonal spikes) don't see the point in it. But if you do... watch your depth gauge!!!!"
I agree it can be dangerous - at depths you can lose track of your gauges and get in trouble, or in a pool you can get so carried away that you black out. These things are risks we need to be aware of.
But to say, "with all these wonderful terrestrial opportunities", why bother? They just don't get it, do they? I, myself, love to dive nude or topless, but I wouldn't have the nerve to do it on a dive boat. So, I usually just find nice private spots to skinny dip. (I know this really great waterfall in the Cherokee National Forest, but I digress.)
But I am an optimist, and I believe that most Scuba divers are true aquaphiles underneath, they just don't know it yet. Perhaps they will never discover that intense sexual excitement brought on by oxygen deprivation. Or the sensual feel of water caressing your body. Or the multitude of positions you can do without the constraints of gravity. Or just the feel of weightlessness itself. I pity those prudes.
